The Gathering at Minneriya
One of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth between July and October – hundreds of wild elephants converging on the shrinking Minneriya reservoir, with concentrations exceeding 300 animals in a single afternoon recorded.
Ancient Minneriya Reservoir
A 3rd-century BC irrigation tank built by King Mahasena, still functional after 1,700 years – the water it holds as the dry season deepens is precisely what draws the elephants in such extraordinary numbers.
Wasgamuwa Riverine Elephant Herds
Substantial elephant herds along the Mahaweli and Wasgamuwa rivers in exceptional riverine habitat – a remote, unhurried alternative to the busier southern parks with consistently low visitor numbers.
Waterbirds and Aquatic Wildlife
Both parks support exceptional waterbird concentrations, mugger crocodiles, freshwater turtles and the endemic purple-faced leaf monkey in the surrounding forest margins.
Toque Macaques and Spotted Deer
The endemic toque macaque – found only in Sri Lanka – is commonly seen in the forest margins alongside spotted axis deer and sambar deer grazing in the grassland areas near the reservoir edges.
