Tour Overview

A guided day of exploration in Sri Lanka’s most significant lowland rainforest ecosystems – either Sinharaja Rain Forest (UNESCO World Heritage Site) or the Kanneliya Forest Reserve – with a specialist resident naturalist focusing on endemic bird species, medicinal flora and the extraordinary biodiversity of a primary tropical forest.

Duration

Full Day

Tour Highlights

Endemic Bird Species

Sinharaja holds 22 of Sri Lanka’s 26 endemic bird species within a single day’s walking range – including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, the red-faced malkoha and the green-billed coucal – observable with a specialist naturalist.

Primary Rainforest Canopy

Ancient trees with interlocking canopies rising 30 to 40 metres overhead, supporting a layered ecosystem of extraordinary biodiversity with buttressed roots, epiphytes, lianas and constant wildlife movement.

Mixed-Species Feeding Flocks

Groups of 20 or more bird species moving together through the canopy in coordinated feeding flocks – one of the most impressive wildlife phenomena in Asian forests, found reliably in Sinharaja.

Medicinal Plant Guided Walk

A guided walkthrough of the forest’s extraordinary medicinal flora – endemic ferns, orchids and plants referenced in Ayurvedic texts – providing botanical and cultural context to the biodiversity underfoot.

Forest Streams and Endemic Wildlife

Clear streams support endemic freshwater fish, crabs and shrimp found only in the wet-zone river systems of Sri Lanka – a reminder that the biodiversity of Sinharaja extends well below the canopy.
